The Project also intends to strengthen state and local biodiversity management institutions through implementing the provisions of Biodiversity Act, 2002; contribute towards fulfilling India’s commitment to the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) by achieving the Indian National Biodiversity Targets and Aichi targets.
Project Targets
The project will cover 12 cluster CCAs covering an area of about 30,000 ha, in 70 villages of the selected five districts viz., Kohima, Mokokchung, , Peren, Tuensang & Wokha.
These CCAs will be taken up under seven (7) Landscape Themes as indicated in the table below. The project will also target around 35,000 households living in the identified 70 villages.
Project Duration
The Project is for a duration of up to 8 years (2020-2027). The project will start with a 1 year planning and piloting phase, followed by an implementation phase of 4 years and a consolidation phase of up to three years.
These CCAs will be taken up under seven (7) Landscape Themes as indicated in the table below. The project will also target around 35,000 households living in the identified 70 villages.
Major Project Components
There are four major project components as mentioned below:
- Conservation Planning and EPA- This includes sub-components such as preparation of village Micro Plans, CCA Management Plans and Landscape Plans. It also includes activities such as Preparation of People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBR), Entry Point Activities (EPA) and Baseline Survey.
- Conservation Measures for CCA Management – Achievable activities identified in the various plans developed will be implemented through this components. An additional Conservation Fund will be provided to the project villages, which is primarily for sustaining the conservation efforts post project.
- Capacity Building- This component includes various capacity development activities such as trainings, workshops, development of education modules, exposure trips and also documentation.
- Livelihood: The project engages in livelihood support through a contest-based approach, promoting biodiversity-based and sustainable livelihoods, on-farm/off-farm activities, and Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS). It facilitates holistic sustainable livelihoods and aims to enhance rural income, leading to improved Community Conserved Areas and better climate change adaptation through inclusive community involvement at all project stages.
